Did you know that 2,500 tonnes of CD’s are thrown away every year, while the average CD album is only ever played eight times?

In response to this, we have launched our Animal Tracks appeal to help animals of all kinds across the UK. We are asking people to donate unwanted music CD’s to the appeal. The CDs you send us will be resold through an organisation called Music Magpie who give us money for each CD that meet their minimum standards - more on that below.
The money we raise will fund programmes of work covering education, political lobbying, scientific research and field work, all of which improve the welfare of animals.
“Animal Tracks” has already received messages of support from a host of famous names, including comedians Ricky Gervais, Simon Pegg and Stewart Lee; soprano Lesley Garrett and percussionist Evelyn Glennie; fashion designer Katharine Hamnet and pop and rock stars such as Alesha Dixon and Peter Hook (New Order/Joy Division).
The appeal began in spectacular fashion after Pete Waterman’s studio donated over 500 CD’s to Animal Tracks. Donations have also been received from the management of Marina & the Diamonds, Lloyd Cole and Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
We are asking for original music CD’s (not copies) with the sleeve and booklet intact. They can be from any genre, so everything from comedy to soundtracks and from artists spanning Abba to Zappa.
If you would like to donate CD’s to the appeal please send them to:
Animal Tracks c/o OneKind
10 Queensferry Street
Edinburgh, EH2 4PG
Supporters who collect 100 or more CD’s will have their CD’s collected for free.
Take part in our poll
We are also running a light-hearted online poll exploring the relationship between pets and music. Please, if you are pet owner, take a moment to take part in this survey. It’s really easy and should take less than a minute to complete.
You can find it here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DJ7J2S5
Thank you for supporting our Animal Tracks appeal. Together we can create a more compassionate world for all. HumanKind. AnimalKind. OneKind.
While I’m sure this has the best intentions, I think you’ll get substantially less donated, asking people to pay for postage to send them to you - than if you could get say - a few supermarkets to host a recycling bank, where people could take them for nothing.
Is there anything that can be done for copied discs? I’ve thrown away lots of them, but not originals (as selling/giving away original discs, surely means I no longer own the right to play the music that was contained on them, that I might have put on an mp3 player?)
Also, if you’re recycling the discs, why do you need the sleeves and booklets?
confused why you need the cases and booklets - I have hundreds of CDs (and dvds/computer disks) in slip cases I would happily recycle given the chance.
Hi Colin, we need the cases etc because the CDs get resold – anything without original cases can just get recycled. Onekind only makes money from the CDs that can be resold – any extra that cannot be resold, we will send for recycling. - JR
Hi Ben and Colin, I think the blog post here is a little confusing and makes more of the recycling than it should. Sorry about that. The main purpose of Animal Tracks is to raise money for OneKind through the resale of unwanted CDs. We would only ‘recycle’ the ones that cannot be resold - eg the ones with no label or barcode. I have amended the post slightly - apologies again for any confusion. John
