Working with partners, OneKind was instrumental in achieving the strictest regulatory regime in the UK for the use of snares, by influencing the Scottish Parliament during its consideration of the Wildlife and Natural Environment (Scotland) Act 2011 (the WANE Act).

Wire snare in countryside

Although MSPs voted against a complete ban, they agreed to stricter regulation.

The provisions of the WANE Act include technical requirements designed to reduce the suffering caused by snares, and requirements for anybody setting snares to undergo training and certification, for each snare to have a user ID tag, and for snares to be checked at least every 24 hours.

OneKind continues to campaign for an outright ban on these primitive traps.
