Support our work Leave a gift in your Will Leaving a legacy By supporting OneKind with a gift in your Will, you will help create a Scotland where all animals have a life worth living. Gifts from Wills are a vital source of income for OneKind. They help with our ongoing work to protect Scotland’s animals; through campaigns, research, and education. We need to raise £300,000 each year to continue our investigation and campaigning work and gifts in wills currently contribute half of our income, with the rest coming from our generous supporters and the public. We hope our practical tips and advice on writing or updating your Will are helpful as well as demonstrating how valuable gifts in Wills have been and continue to be in fighting against animal cruelty. Read our full legacy guide Why OneKind? OneKind has a long history of making a big impact on the lives of animals. We’ve been protecting Scotland’s animals for over a hundred years. While our remit has expanded over the years, now covering all animals, we are still driven by the same passion to protect animals that motivated our founders. We want to continue standing up for and protecting animals long into the future and we are very grateful that you are considering a gift to OneKind in your Will. How leaving a legacy creates a better world for animals In recent times, our campaign to bring in CCTV to Scottish abattoirs resulted in the Scottish Government introducing compulsory video recording in all relevant areas of slaughterhouses in Scotland, we stopped the hedgehog cull on the Uists, ended the indiscriminate killing of seals and following a decade of campaigning, wild animals will no longer be used for entertainment in travelling circuses in Scotland. By changing laws to protect animals we stop cruelty from happening – forever. More recently, thousands of mountain hares will no longer be shot thanks to the amendment in the Animals and Wildlife (Penalties, Protections and Powers) Bill (Scotland). None of these successes would have been possible without generous legacies from our supporters. Leaving a legacy to OneKind, no matter the size, makes a huge difference. Leaving just 1% to OneKind can help protect animals for the future. They will help achieve more successes in the future and allow us to keep fighting to end cruelty to Scotland’s animals for good. Types of legacy We understand that writing or updating your Will is a very personal decision and one which will take time. You may also wish to talk about it with your family and loved ones beforehand. There are three types of legacy: Residuary – Many people choose this type of gift as it makes sure family is looked after first. You can leave all or a share of your estate once your expenses and other gifts have been taken care of. Pecuniary – This is where you choose to leave a gift of a specified amount of money. Specific – This is a chosen gift or item left to OneKind. This could be property, shares or artwork for example. You might also consider a reversionary legacy – or lifetime gift. This could be appropriate if you need to ensure that relatives or friends are provided for after you die. You can leave your house or income for their benefit during their lifetime. On their death, the property or any remaining income can be passed to OneKind.
