March was a momentous month for animals in Scotland!

From welcoming the announcement that snares will be banned in Scotland, handing in the Unbound the Greyhound campaign open letter, winning an award for our animation, continuing our campaign to end the use of cages for pigs and commencing our Spring raffle that is packed with fantastic prizes – it’s been an incredibly exciting and busy month here at OneKind.

Of course, we couldn’t do it without the ongoing help of our wonderful supporters. Thank you for your continued compassion for animals.

After decades of campaigning, snare traps are to be banned in Scotland

OneKind demo against snares

In what was an historical milestone for the country and our animals, on Thursday 21st of March, the Scottish Government passed the Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Bill, that will ban the use of snares.
We are elated and relieved that - finally - Scotland will now be a snare-free country and wild, farmed or companion animals will no longer suffer in these barbaric contraptions.

That afternoon, our Patron, Wildlife TV Presenter and Conservationist, Chris Packham, said: “Today is a big win for Scotland, for compassion and for common sense, but most importantly a win for our severely declining wildlife”.

As you know, alongside like-minded individuals and organisations, we have been campaigning for over four decades to secure this snaring ban to protect animals. We would like to wholeheartedly thank everyone who has supported the campaign over the years – we did it.

We delivered the Unbound the Greyhound open letter to the Scottish Government

OneKind and supporters hand in open letter to Scottish Government.

In early March, the Scottish Government received 22,655 signatures of support for an end to greyhound racing in Scotland!
After months of gathering signatures, alongside our campaign colleagues, supportive MSPs and 13 rescue greyhounds, we handed in the open letter outside the Scottish Parliament.

Amongst the team of canine campaigners, were Kaas, Sasha and Joy, whose stories we shared as part of the campaign as they all suffered life-changing injuries during their time in the cruel dog racing industry.

Thank you to all who signed and shared the open letter in support!

The Unbound the Greyhound film wins People’s Choice Award

OneKind team members accepting award at charity film event.

On the evening of Wednesday 20th March, the Unbound the Greyhound animation was awarded GOLD in the People’s Choice category of the prestigious Smiley Charity Film Awards!

Best of all, this was all thanks to you. This award was entirely decided by votes from supporters – thank you!

OneKind’s Campaigner and Press Officer, Eve, and Social Media and Communications Officer, Rachel, were delighted to accept the award at the star-studded ceremony at the Odeon Luxe in London’s Leicester Square, surrounded by inspirational charities.

Whilst we are, of course, overjoyed that the animation won – it’s more than an award for the film, it’s support for the campaign to end dog racing in Scotland.

Thank you for standing up for pigs

Sow lying in farrowing crate.

As we carry on our campaign for pigs, we would like to take a moment to thank everyone who has urged the Scottish Government to consult on a phased end of farrowing crates for pigs.

Since launching the campaign, there has already been an incredible 3,520 emails sent to Minister for Agriculture and Connectivity, Jim Fairlie using our e-action.

You can catch up on why we are asking people to stand up for pigs by reading our campaign blog.
