Today, history was made — and you were part of it. The Scottish Parliament has officially passed the Greyhound Racing (Offences) (Scotland) Bill, making Scotland the latest country to ban greyhound racing.  

After years of tireless campaigning from the Unbound the Greyhound coalition and our dedicated supporters, greyhound racing will finally come to an end in Scotland.

The ban in Scotland comes just one day after Wales passed it's greyhound racing ban.

A landmark victory for greyhounds

The Bill, brought forward by Mark Ruskell MSP, who has worked tirelessly to end greyhound racing, was passed by a majority of MSPs following today’s debate at Holyrood.  

With bans to be implemented in both Scotland and Wales, the two countries are sending a clear message across the rest of the UK: greyhound racing is archaic and such a cruel pastime does not belong in our nation.

Eve Massie Bishop, OneKind’s Head of Campaigns and Media, speaking on behalf of the Unbound the Greyhound coalition, said: 

“After years of campaigning, we’re thrilled that Scotland has become the latest country to ban greyhound racing. 

This victory shows what can happen when a dedicated group of animal welfare organisations and passionate individuals stand together to demand better for Scotland’s greyhounds. And we are very grateful to Mark Ruskell MSP, whose steadfast advocacy has made this historic moment possible. 

Today sends a powerful message: greyhounds are not commodities to be used for financial gain — they are individuals, just like our beloved pet dogs, deserving of safety, dignity, and a loving family. 

With today’s decision, Scotland has cemented its position as a leader in animal welfare.” 

You made this happen

For almost three years, you have fought alongside us — writing to your MSPs and the Minister, signing petitions and pledging your support for the Greyhound Racing (Offences) (Scotland) Bill.  

You refused to accept cruelty as “entertainment” and fought for justice for greyhounds. And today, because of your advocacy, greyhounds will never be forced to race in Scotland again.
